- Who is Destiny?
Destiny is a multi-dimensional entrepreneur and educator, daughter, sister, mentor, influencer, member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and a friend, who loves to empower the youth and other women. Destiny is spontaneous and full of laughs with a larger than life personality. Destiny means well in every aspect of her life and occasionally struggles navigating through adulthood at 25 like anyone else. She has a go getter mentality and expects to win!
- We see you graduated from North Carolina Central University. Tell us about why and how you decided to attend NCCU.
The Illustrious NCCU! My mother graduated from Central and I just knew that there was no other place I wanted to be than the sloping hills and verdant greens. I fell in love with the School of Business and their vision. I had only applied to two colleges after graduating high school with a 3.9 GPA. Everyone knew I had my mind set on NCCU and with the plus of being accepted into the University Honors Program, it was destined.
- You are the CEO and Founder of Destiny Fulfilled Co. LLC. What is the purposed of your business? How and why did you decide to start it?
The purpose of my company is to empower and inspire women to succeed. I started back in 2011 with our Ultimate Prom Glam for young women who wanted to attend prom but needed that extra push. We actually just completed our 6th Ultimate Prom Glam this spring. We became an LLC in 2016 and over time have evolved to also offer our Queen’s Camp Mentor Program (which is why I always look forward to Mondays). I developed the company after coming to an understanding that everyone does not come from the same background and/or resources as I did but everyone deserved the opportunity to succeed in life as well by any means. And if I can reach one or a million, I’m grateful to do so.
- Congratulations on becoming a woman of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. Why did you choose this sorority? How was the journey to becoming an Alpha woman?
Thank you, thank you! I obviously had to go with the Phirst and Phinest 😌😂 but on a serious note, service to all mankind stuck out to me as well as our founder’s inspiration to originate the sorority. It’s been apart of my life for as long as I can recall. My mother instilled the values in me early (yes, she’s a member too). The journey was LONG but well worth it and I appreciate my sorority sisters more than I can express. They truly have been shields and lights in my development into womanhood.
- Thank you for being an Educator. What is it like being an 8th Grade Math Teacher? What is the biggest challenge? What do you love the most?
Awww, thank you for acknowledging us! It’s an everyday comedy/drama series 😅. Overall, it’s an phenomenal opportunity to be knee deep and hands on in the field of impacting our youth. I’m beyond grateful that I was selected to be an educator and last this long. Some of my greatest challenges are definitely keeping a straight face when my students are telling me about their dating or friend issues (you know how kids are - animated at times) and assuring myself that it’s okay, if I cannot save them all. Some days I go home and I breakdown because my student’s life experiences aren’t always so delicate. I teach in a Title 1 school and many of the socioeconomic factors affect how my students perform. However, that’s also the main thing I love - my kids are fighters (not physical) and are determined to have a better life. I appreciate their efforts and growth. It makes me happy when they win also!
- Why is giving back to your community important to you? In what ways do you give back?
Giving back is important because people need to see that you can be successful and make a difference in the world, no matter where you’re from. I host my weekly mentor program at a local rec center that most of my students hang out at. We take the girls on college visits, trips and implement a community service project within the program. The Ultimate Prom Glam has provided over 30 young women with dresses, hair, makeup and gift cards over the years. I facilitate a career and college readiness program at a local group home. Tutor for a local youth football team. While volunteering with my sorority as a high school chairman for our debutants and partaking in our other service initiatives. This spring my PR Agency hosted a benefit concert for the local group home as well.
- How do you balance your lifestyle? What does your self-care regime look like?
A calendar and to do lists. It sounds so simple but I allot specific tasks to specific days and stick to the plan. My self care regime looks like... saying no often and not carrying the guilt afterwards. I also do a lot of retail and musical therapy.
- In your own words, describe what a purposed pearl is.
Someone who intentionally motivates and works in the field of being their most authentic self while uplifting and serving others.
